4. The Interstate Highway System
The Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 established the largest public works project in American history. This act connected cities and together through a system of highways that are still used today.
The Interstate Highway System made travel and commerce much easier throughout the country, resulting in an economic boom. It also allowed for increased mobility, with Americans able to more easily relocate. Additionally, it has resulted in a decrease in air pollution due to its efficient transportation network. The 1950s was truly a time of great transformation for American infrastructure.
